Blood in the mobile

We humans are in the age of scientific revolution. Humankind admits its ignorance and begins to acquire unprecedented power. Nowadays Electronics play a huge role in daily life. Almost 60% of the world population is using mobile phones & other electronic gadgets. Mobile industry is growing explosively. Everybody are using mobile & it is so attach to us and it is really hard to live without it.

WAIT!!!!

Something is happening terrible.  You are using your mobile & talking with your loved ones and suddenly   your mobile starts to bleed, what will you do??

This is not a magical realism or surrealism. The bloodshed is true.

Imagine you are financing for a war without knowing in your presence

Do you want to know where the blood comes from? What is the problem behind it??

Before Entering into it we must know a small history of CONGO

index

King Leopold II of Belgium was a sole owner of Congo from (1835-1909) “the world’s only colony claimed by one man”. The country had massive resource of ivory and rubber, in fact it was a rise of the industrial revolution thus car production was at peak, so he exported rubber to foreign countries and made good wealth & become one of the richest men in the world. At that time Congo and other small African countries where the only source of rubber in the whole world. He and his agents exploited the natives who stayed there.

The natives were treated as slaves and worked hard. They were tortured and started killing them. They were cruelly punished by chopping right hand, if they hoped to escape the terror then their limbs being cut off.

As it named as “CONGO HORROR “death claimed almost 1 to 3 crore in just 20 years.

After the brutality and mutilation of 25 years Congo went under the Belgium government. But the exploitation continued.  At last in 1960 Congo gets freedom from Belgium & becomes   Democratic Republic of the Congo. But their fate continues and even worse till now.

The government is stuck in many problems the major is the communal riots happening there among the two sects (Hutus and Tutsis)people are killed, Almost 30 % of women are sexual harassed. Genocide is growing day by day.

In every mobile we use have the blood stains still now, but how? Congo is rich in many natural resources but economically it is so poor why??? Who is the victim??? Main problem is for minerals.

                                                           Conflict Minerals

There is a reason for the name Conflict minerals. Minerals play a key role in electronic industry. Among those Cassaterite (tin) 64 %, coltan 80 % of the world are found in this country. These minerals are the core properties of any electronic product we use in day today life.

Tech Giants like Apple, Nokia, Samsung & Chinese companies have contract tie up business with the Congo government. Since there is no proper set up or governance in the country, the government secretariat officials itself owns a private mining companies. Minerals hesi_Conflict_Minerals_Infographicre are extracted by mining process. There are many quarries undertaken by government named as MPC (mining processing company) here they   dug out minerals and many Congolese men and women are induced to work here.

Forced child labor is major issue here.  These mines are control over by certain groups called Mai-Mai & FDLR the community-based militia groups. They torture workers brutally on heavy works for less wages and they work for the Elite companies for money which they use for weapons to their conflicts.

Kinshasa is the capital of Congo.lot of mines are found in the eastern part of Congo called KIVU Many teenage and the children’s aged below 12 comes from here to the work for their family and for proper food and decent shelter but things happens differently they cannot work on the heat deep inside which exhaust to death & landslides which will close the path of the mines anytime.

Major problem in the region is the communal riots and the genocide between the Hutus & Tutis local native peoples which has huge number of deaths after World War II. Congo government militants called FRDC also acts as armed forces against these peoples. These people’s problems are so in hectic day by day. On the other side mobile companies are launching new phones day by day. This is not a new problem. This is going on for almost fifteen years without a solution till now. The only solution to this problem is that the company should give the proper information about their Supply chain to the consumers. But corporate companies are much aware of this and they are simply avoiding this issue because their attention is only with their competitors & market value.

This is not happening somewhere in the world. This really close to each one of us we pay money & we should know the supply chain of each and every product. Before twenty years we use to purchase by asking the shopkeeper that where the rice or vegetables comes from??? Thus we know that particular place has a good plat form for growing rice. But what happened now? Everything is in packet and sealed. So think twice………

Congo cartoon

A Danish director Frank Piasecki Poulsen  shot a documentary based on this issue which ignited many minds to this issue.

Blood In mobile (2010) by Frank Piasecki Poulsen

The film addresses the issue of conflict minerals by examining illegal cassiterite mining in the North-Kivu province in eastern DR Congo. He personally go to Congo and experience himself in the conflict regions & talk to Nokia senior executives about the conflict minerals but he couldn’t get the proper results from the companies. this film questions the so called 1st world countries and their wealth from exploiting from 3rd world countries. The question is always there but ANSWER????????
